Coco on the Go

About Me
After graduating from college, I made a big move. All the way to Panama City, Panama, to be exact. While living there, I worked for a non-profit organization that introduced me to two of my close friends, who then introduced me to scuba diving. Fish, I decided while underwater, were very cool.
I returned home to the US a few months later, glowing with a Caribbean tan and a fresh zeal for marine life. Eager to get fieldwork experience, I became a fisheries observer in the Bering Sea, living aboard commercial fishing vessels while collecting data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That exposure to the fishing industry was formative for me and soon after, I turned my sights towards graduate school at the University of Washington’s School of Marine and Environmental Affairs.
It was at the University of Washington where I learned of the Bonderman Fellowship, a unique opportunity in which a select group of students are funded to independently travel the world for eight months. This seemed unreal to me, but I applied anyway. To my complete surprise, I was selected.
In June 2024, I completed my Master's degree. One month later, I boarded a plane to Mongolia. In the year leading up to that flight, I spent a lot of time in introspection, trying to figure out what I wanted to get out of this experience.
Put simply, I want to get to know the world. I want to see how people make use of their natural resources, how they weave their environments into their clothing, their cuisine, their culture. I want to back away from the consumerism that seems to imbue American culture and step into different ways of living.
While I travel, I intend to absorb everything I can and write about it all along the way – for me, for my family, for friends, for anyone who takes an interest in this sort of thing.
So that's the story of how this little blog came to be. I'm glad you're here to follow along.
